Application of the Month: Engine Control Solutions Through Partners

Echo Mechanical & Electrical Engineering (EMEE NZ Ltd) a partner in New Zealand, shared a recent solution using an ACB2001 to repair a tug boat that needed to get back to moving large ships in a narrow channel entrance.
When a tugs’ Caterpillar 3606 Woodward Hydraulic Governor failed on the main engine, the owners called EMEE NZ Ltd for a solution. The vessel’s propulsion system utilizes two 1000 HP Caterpillar 3606 marine diesel engines which are the prime movers for 2 Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP). The Caterpillar 3606 engines fuel injection pumps require high torque to move from idle to full throttle.
After consulting with GAC, AXIOMATIC, and others, John Mackenzie at EMEE NZ Ltd decided to use a combination of the GAC ACB2001 actuator with an AXIOMATIC AX100310 Unidirectional Digital Control mounted on each engine to replace the original equipment.
Once fitted to both engines the solution more than proved its worth. The customer was happy with the service and the parts, with testing done prior to installation, ensuring a good ending.

Product Of The Month: ACB2001 HEAVY DUTY ACTUATOR
GAC’s ACB2001 actuator provides 12 lb-ft [16.3 N∙m] of torque delivers heavy duty rotary output, at 24 V, in a linear torque proportional electric servo actuator design to support mechanical fuel system control.
GAC’s ESD5300 Series speed control unit supports the necessary control needed to give this actuator full 35 degree rotation.
Internal springs provide fail safe operation by forcing the actuator to the fuel shut off position when the actuator is de-energized. Since the design has no sliding parts, and is totally sealed, its reliability is outstanding, and no maintenance is necessary. The ACB2001 has proven its worth in supporting large block pumps, dual medium carburetors, and many large size carburetors.

VISITORS FROM AFRICA AT GAC
Governors America Corp was pleased to welcome our Hagar Distribution partners and their customers to our headquarters in Agawam MA for training with our Applications Support Team. The team spent two days covering engine control and systems training and offering insights into new ways to support their customers in South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
The 2-day training was spent passing on new skills and understanding of GAC products and the possibilities for generator and engine control. The crew from South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, travelled the 12 thousand kilometers (8k miles) trip (24 hours of travel!) to visit Governors America. We are humbled. We have never had such a group of polite, inquisitive people visiting.
